Trip Report:
The four Eugene residents met at South Eugene HS and the four Springfield area residents met at Pleasant Hill High. With Brian and Terry driving we headed for the Pioneer Gulch trailhead on the west side of Diamond Peak. We were able to drive within 1/4 mile of the trailhead as the snow is melting fast with recent warm weather. Our group was on the trail by 0745, headed up into a brilliant morning on the mountain. We made good time up the slope but unfortunately I had to stop just above treeline due to feeling a little under the weather. However, my stopping point afforded a nice view of the SW Bowl and I was able to maintain radio contact with Brian as the rest of the group climbed the last 1,500' to the summit area and then skied down the bowl. Warm temps made for soft/slushy snow conditions on the way down but the group finished together around 1725. I was quite happy with the performance of my new Carbon Surf skis. Kudos to Chrissy for skiing this black diamond run "old school style" on skinny skis with no metal edges!
